Teachers’ Day Celebration with our teachers: September 6


Teachers’ day was celebrated with full zest on 6th September 2014. Different activities were planned for teachers working with our Community Based Educational Programme and School Partnership Programme. Activities included Fashion Show, Comedy Express, Mad Ad world, Jhalak Dikhlaja (Dance talent show) and Sa re ga ma pa (Singing talent show). Each and every teacher was involved in some or the other activity. The celebration was celebrated with full enthusiasm. We were happy to see all our teachers actively participating and for enjoying the event thoroughly.

First Self Study 
center at Door Step School :7 August
Door Step School started an initiative of self study center wherein children can come after school to study. As the houses of these children are too small and children face lot of disturbances, the BalSamuha room in Transit camp premises of Cuff Parade has been made available for Balsamuha kids for self study. It has found that children also approach the teachers and coordinators for difficulties during studying. 
Door Step School kids go eco-friendly this Ganesh Festival:28 August


The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi always brings a lot of enthusiasm and joy. During this period of ten days Kids enjoy the most in their own innocent ways. Door Step School made the celebration more grander by teaching kids the importance of Three R’s(Reduce  ,Reuse and Recycle).Children made hand puppets of  Ganesha from using old papers and  CDs. When Eco- Ganesha was ready kids felt happy and proud of their handicraft.
Door Step School Kids at Kidzania Theme Park  :17 August

Kidzania Theme park focuses on giving the kids a wonderful learning-while-playing experience through role-playing of the profession they want to pursue when they grow up..Children enjoyed playing roles of a chef, a fireman, a beautician, a doctor and a construction worker; piloting a plane, surgeons, waiters/cooks at a restaurant, and as TV hosts and cameramen. Through this activity kids got knowledge of different professions they can pursue. The experience was so realistic that kids lost themselves in activities. Ramzan said that “I can become fireman and help people by extinguishing fire. Aarthi said that “Didi I will become a pilot and take people to different places of their choice”. 
Independence day celebration at Door Step School:15 August

Door Step School  celebrated Independence day with great joy and pomp like every year. On 15 th August Flag hoisting was done in the community by the local authorities. Door Step School Teachers and  coordinators along children actively participated in this ceremony. A day prior to 15 th August children made flags by collage work. . They carried this flag at the time of flag hosting in community with them. Namarta was very happy to  carry Indian flag with her friends. On Independence day  she took the lead in the march through the community and chanted slogans to spread importance of the day. Teachers always motivated children to collected the flags which are dropped on the streets on the next day.

Kids enjoy the Open deck bus ride and explore Mumbai city.

Children of Study class and Non Formal education went for the open deck bus ride.The motto behind the  ride was to give opportunity to children to explore landmarksand heritage structure in Mumbai.Children enjoyed the view from the top and were astonished see the view of Arabian sea.They went crazy singing songs and dancing all the way.Anita after watching the Twin tower said that"This is the glass palace.People here must be very happy residing in such a big houses."

7 days Capsule training for Reading promoters:4-11 June

Our training team conducted training session for Reading promoters.In this session Reading promoters were trained on listening skills,Mime and different features of efficient Story narration.Through this training they were taught how to select good books for children.In last two days of the session training team did observation on how they do assessment of children's performance using the indicators. 

DSS kids become part of KHUDBUD (Television science game show for Vigyan Prasar)

Beacon Television are currently working on a Television Science Game Show for Vigyan Prasar (Department of Science & Technology, GOI). Khudbud, Khel Vigyan Ke  is a 52 episode Series with the mission to popularize Science and encourage children to Learn By Doing.This Programme is telecasted every Saturday morning at 8.30 am on the National Network of Doordarshan.Door Step School kids were the part of this venture.Children got opportunity to learn about scientific concept through different experiments.

Bal Samuha children directed towards bright future through Career Guidance Workshop:25 June

Children of our Bal Samuha groups who appeared for 10th and 12th std. exam, had gathered together to know about different courses that they can pursue in future.  The Goldman Sachs Company Employees volunteered to to conduct extremely helpful Career Guidance workshop for these children.They provided them with information about courses and career opportunities.Children were also introduced to the process of resume writing with its important elements. The information that they came to know through this workshop will help them to make informed decision to achieve bright and successful career.

Finger licking khichdi at the School on Wheels:16 June

Khichadi programme has started for kids on School on Wheels.Children are enjoying their meals at the bus because of this initiative.Before this they used to strive hard for their lunch.This initiative has also boosted the regularity of children attending the class.We thank Gayatri Prabhu for her support that has helped to fill tummies of our tiny tots.

DSS Kids play Carom to learn word formation:13 March

Carom is such a game which is enjoyed by one and all. Coordinator Sujata Walavalkar came up with an innovative idea of Language Carom. All the coins were covered with different letters. Children were asked to play and form different words of letters on the coins which they pocketed in the flow of the game. Children came up with many new words. This learning through recreation activity was enjoyed by all the children.

Tiny tots teach their parents through the exhibition:14 March

Project Exhibition was organised in 'E' ward by Balwadi Kids.Little ones were manning different stalls named as Fruit stall, Flowers stall, Our helpers etc.They were giving information with great enthusiasm to their parents and visitors who visited their stall. Parents were keen to listen what their kids were explaining.
Sarth's Father Said "The information which kids are giving is of much higher level than their age. I am feeling good to see my son speaking so confidently. This reflects the progress he has made after joining Door Step School.

Door Step School Kids earn praise for their performance in Delhi:5 March


This year on its seventh foundation day, the NCPCR had organised a campaign " From Street to School" to  focus on children living on and off the streets without safe shelter, access to education, healthcare, leisure, and sports. NGOs from all over India were invited to be the part of the Campaign.A team of four girls Devi Puniya Chauvan ,Anita Sevnath ,Akshata Chauvan, Vandana   Lalit Shaue along with Coodinators Surekha Pathare and Arati Hande went to represent Door Step School.The important activities which took place were
  • Facilitating issue of Aadhar Card to street children 
  • Generating awareness on the issues and concerns of street children 
  • Creating Webpage on street children
  • Organising panel discussions on the needs of street children.
The cultural dance performance done by our girls was praised by audience.   
DSS Teachers come together to celebrate Women's day :8 March
A motivating session was organised for all teachers to mark the celebration of International Women's day.The session was guided by the Training team.Teachers were divide into small groups.Each group was asked to read a book and select a female character in it and portray the feminine quality in that character.Each group was asked to present these qualities through the charts to other groups.The posters were very innovative and clearly displayed different qualities which prevails in a women.Teachers came ahead and shared their personal experiences to inspire others. Pride of being a woman of substance was cherished through this session.

DSS Kids at Global Conference of Acturaries:17 Feb



Door Step School is proud to be the part of the 16 th Global Conference of Actuaries which was held at Hotel Renaissance,Mumbai.It is third consecutive year that we are participating in the conference.16 kids were shortlisted for the conference from different fields were we run our projects.At the conference kids were made comfortable and introduced to the actuarial professsion.All these kids were asked to write on a very interesting topic"My mathematics teachers's class".A talented girl from our School Partnership programme Suman  Ray left the judges speechless through her thoughts which she had written.A short and mathematically oriented contest was held for the kids.Master Suhel Md Ansari bagged first place in this contest. 
Great leaders of India inspire Door Step School kids on Shivaji Jayanti:19 Feb


On account of Shivaji jayanti small exhibiton was organised in the community to spread the information about great deeds done by our leaders.Firstly our kids under the guidance of teachers gathered all the infomation on 5 leaders namely Shivaji Maharaj,Savitribai Phule,Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar ,Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Mhatma Gandhi.Teachers gave elaborated information on their life ,wokings for the people.Children made different things from clay and paper which symbolises the success stories of these great people.Children then disseminated this information to their parents and other children in the community.

Our Founder Bina Sheth Lashkari awarded with Stree Shakti Puraskar 2013(Mata Jijabai)
What started with a Non Formal Education class for 25 out of school kids in Cuffe Parade slum community at their doorstep, has grown into an organisation which over a period 25 years has touched lives of more than 2,35,000 children. Bina Lashkari our beloved Founder of Door Step School was honoured with the Civilian Honour - Stree Shakti Puraskar 2013 - (Mata Jijabai Award) for her outstanding contribution towards the socio economic development of children and for the achievement in the field of education and training. We all are excited and happy for all the recognition and praise. 
With this we also thank all of you with whose support and contribution Door Step School has achieved its Silver Jubilee milestone and envisions to achieve many more.

Vachan Mela -Reading Fair at Dongri and Mandvi Municipal school:28-29 Nov

Door Step School's Reading Promotion Programme focuses mainly on improving reading skills of children and with this motive Vacchan Mela - A Reading Fair, was organised at Dongri and Mandavi Municipal School.Reading Fair had different stalls like Jaago Grahak Jaago,Hum Bazar Gaye,Story Puzzle,Lekhakala Patrah,Chitravarun Naav Dene,Ikalelya Ghostinchi Nava Hihine.Children first enjoyed the puppet show.At one point in time, only 5 students were directed to a particular stall, and the teacher student ratio was 2:5. The student was asked his standard, given an activity expected for that level- but if he/she couldn’t do that- the activity was made harder/simpler as required.

Santa Claus brings the magic of smile this Christmas for Door Step School kids

The most eagerly waited moment of every kid as the year approaches its end is the Christmas Day. Like every year we celebrated Christmas with our kids with great joy and pomp.
Party started with decoration of Christmas tree and then kids merrily enjoyed singing songs and dancing.The main centre of attraction was Children's favourite and beloved Santa Claus.  
This time to add icing to cake, the magic show was organised in the Christmas party. Children were left amazed when Magician Mr Chandresh performed magic tricks. Sunny  who was actually involved in magic trick expressed that "If I learn magic I will give joy to others specially who are sad in their life.
